Notes (and stats) on College Basketball Opening Day

So, the college basketball season is finally here again. See below for some notes, stats, and observations about the first day of the CBB season.

(1) Here are the number of games for each broadcast window for the day (based on the Eastern time zone):

Noon-3

2 p.m.-1

4 p.m.-1

5 p.m.-2

5:30 p.m.-1

6 p.m.-3

6:30 p.m.-5

6:45 p.m.-1

7 p.m.-57 (busiest window-not a surprise)

7:30 p.m.-22

7:45 p.m.-1

8 p.m.-44 (second-busiest window, also not a surprise)

8:30 p.m.-11

9 p.m.-22

9:30 p.m.-2

10 p.m.-16

10:15 p.m.-1

10:30 p.m.-2

11 p.m.-3

11:30 p.m.-1

11:59 p.m.-1

(2) I noticed in putting my schedule together for tomorrow that there are 73 (out of 200 total) contests between D-1 college basketball teams vs. non-D1 college basketball teams (D-II or lower competition). That means 36.5 percent of all games played on opening day will involve teams that SHOULD have little chance to beat their D-1 foes. I am sure at least a few will pull off an upset and win (maybe even to spite me), but as much as I love college basketball, I refuse to watch any game between a D-1 team and a non-D1 team unless it's an exhibition. Even then, they are usually pretty hard to watch. I understand these smaller schools can use the money they get from these buy games, but it largely leads to an unwatchable product. The fact that there are so many this year (and most every year) is disappointing, especially when there are no real marquee matchups to get people's attention.

(3) Because college basketball is starting its season on a Monday due to Tuesday being an election day, it has to go up against Monday Night Football and the Manning-cast. That means no ESPN or ESPN2 games. Hence, it is largely why there are no top shelf marquee matchups. Here is the breakdown of where games are being televised:

ESPN+-106 (I get "the plus" thru Verizon as part of my lovely phone plan; it's a necessary evil if you are a huge CBB fan)

Pac-12 Network-12 (seems a little redundant when all twelve conference teams are playing)

ESPN3/Watch ESPN-19

FS1/Fox Sports Go-8

SEC Network-1

Big Ten Network-2

FloSports/FloHoops-6

Altitude 2-1

CUSA.tv-5

Bally Sports RSNs-2 (I am pretty sure this number is higher; since I don't have DirecTV or a streaming service that has Bally Sports, it is hard to correctly track for me)

Big Ten Network Plus-9

ESPNU-2

NEC Front Row-1

YouTube broadcasts via team's website (or similar)-4

Mountain West Network-7

WCC Network/Stadium-8

Longhorn Network-1

BYUtv-1

No television-3.

(4) Last but not least, I will be attending the Stetson at FSU basketball game at 7 p.m. (I am an FSU alum). However, here are the games I would be watching if I was home (and the ones I will watch some of probably once I do get home):
